Spain is experiencing an urgent need for medical professionals that it cannot cover with national staff. Currently, there is a shortage of 5,000 doctors in the National Health System, and the figure is even higher in nursing professionals.

It is expected that the situation will be much worse in the coming years, as 80,000 doctors and 60,000 nurses will retire in Spain. This is why the country is taking measures and benefiting healthcare professionals who want to come and practice their profession in Spain.

The main causes of this situation are: a demographic change with an increase in the elderly population in Spain, the number of active professionals who are close to retirement, and the lack of an increase in places to study these university careers in recent decades, which means that there are not enough students who can cope with such high demand.

  1. Have the degree in medicine/nursing
  2. Lack of criminal records
  3. Master the Spanish language
  4. Have the degree homologated
  5. Have a job contract
  6. Obtain a visa
  7. Be a member of a Spanish professional organization

If you already meet the first three points, we accompany you to achieve the following requirements.

    1. The homologation is requested through the Electronic Headquarters of the Ministry of Universities (https://universidades.sede.gob.es) where they provide a simple guide to carry out the procedures.
    1. You must create a user and enter all the personal data they request. At any time during the process, you can “Save draft” and continue at another time.

    1. You will have to attach the following documentation:

    1. University degree or certification accrediting its issuance, correctly legalized (if it is not in Spanish, an official translation into Spanish is required).
    2. Academic certification, correctly legalized, of the studies carried out to obtain the degree (if it is not in Spanish, an official translation into Spanish is required).
    3. If the official language of your country is not Spanish, you must provide a document certifying the necessary linguistic competence to practice your profession in Spain.
    4. Passport or identity document.

    1. You must pay a “Homologation Fee” which is currently €166.50.

If you had requested the homologation of your degree before October 19, 2022, but it was not yet concluded, you must renounce that request before concluding the new request. We can help you do it easily.

Homologation will be resolved within a maximum of 2 months.

To homologate your medical specialty in Spain, you must follow these steps:

  1. Request the homologation of your medical degree and specialty from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Professional Training through the Ministry’s website.

  1. You must submit the documentation that proves your training and professional experience, such as your medical degree, certificate of specialty, curriculum vitae, and other documents that the Ministry requires.

  1. Once the Spanish Ministry of Education and Professional Training evaluates your documentation, you may be called for a knowledge examination. This examination consists of two parts: a theoretical and a practical part.

  1. If you pass the examination and are not yet working in Spain, you must register with the Medical Association of the province where you will work.

  1. Finally, you must obtain the necessary permits and authorizations to be able to practice your medical specialty in Spain, such as registration with the Social Security system and obtaining a work permit (if you are not a Spanish or European Union citizen).

Keep in mind that this process can take several months, so we recommend that you start it as soon as possible.
